The Fighter

The Israelites came to their senses. It was nearly 20 years until they lamented after the Lord. 1 Sam 7:2. Then Samuel said, if you are returning to the Lord with all your hearts then put away the foreign gods. Foreign gods in those days were the Ashtaroth and the Baals. These were female deities and fertility gods. Modern day foreign gods can be all sorts of things. The idea is to put away these things and direct your hearts to the Lord and serve Him only! This will petition the Lord to fight off the Philistines. The Philistines were an aggressive, warmongering people who occupied territory southwest of Israel between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River.

The Philistines can be a thorn in the side even today just as they were in the time of the ancient Israelites. Attack can be coming from all sides. What is the remedy? Repent and trust in Jesus, the fighter. 1 Sam 7:10 And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but the LORD thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten before Israel.

Continually losing the battle against the Philistines can be overwhelming. Repent, trust in Jesus, and let Him fight the battle. THE BATTLE BELONGS TO THE LORD!
