Darkness and Light

In 2 Chronicles chapter 21 we see darkness represented by Jehoram’s evil reign over Judah. He killed his six brothers in order to eliminate any competition for the throne. He married the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel and followed their wicked lifestyle. His reign was evil and he abandoned his appointed duty to keep God’s ordinances which would help secure the Davidic dynasty. The Davidic dynasty was to bring forth the Light [Jesus].

Darkness is Disabled

All through the Bible we see darkness trying to thwart the light. Matt. 4:5-7 Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written:

‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and,

‘In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’

Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the LORD your God.’

I can’t help but notice how darkness uses biblical truths to try to obstruct the light. Jesus, who is the word of God and knows the word of God disables the darkness with His response.

Darkness is Defeated

2 Chron. 22:10 Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah attempts to extinguish the Light when she destroys the royal family of Judah. This is the power of darkness working through an evil woman. It is in detail to the satanic attempt through Herod to destroy the seed itself.

In Matt. 2:16 Herod tries to extinguish the light. Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry. And he sent forth and put to death all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the wise men.

As has been noted, darkness is again defeated. Matt. 2:13 says, Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said “arise, take the young Child and His mother and flee to Egypt. Stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him.”

Darkness will not extinguish the light

Back in 2 Chronicles chapter 21 we see darkness attempting to extinguish the light. God promised David and his successors in the royal Messianic line a light or a lamp forever! Evil men in this line could not quench the light. The light was to be fulfilled in the greater David, Jesus Christ, the light of the world!
